Eagle Guard                     April 21, 2000

Dear Eagle Cam Watchers, The male eagle has other duties besides bringing a fish to his mate in the morning and keeping an eye on Pierre. Yesterday I saw the male sitting on his favorite perch on top of a tall pine on top of the island. It looked as though he was just sunning himself. Suddenly he came off that top limb with an attitude.

Usually when an eagle flies it looks as though he just jumps off the branch, catches some air with his wings, and then heads off in some direction that the wind takes him. This time the male looked as though he had a rocket in his tail end.

Since I had never seen a takeoff like that, I followed his flight. He went straight toward the nest. A crow had made the mistake of getting too close to the eagle's nest. When the crow looked up, he saw the eagle heading toward it. The crow went for cover in some thick lower branches in a nearby tree. The eagle prevented himself from smashing into the nest and tree by spreading his broad wings and putting on his air brakes. The rush of his flight shot him almost straight up.

It was an impressive show of force. Nothing had to be screamed. His body language said it all. When I told Pierre what I saw, Pierre said it meant, "Hey, you %$#(*+!!!! If I catch you near my nest again I am going to *&^)#@." I have no doubt that Pierre was correct on that. He is pretty good when it comes to reading body language.

Later in the day when the male was not around, I set up a camera to record the eagle landing on his favorite guard perch. Tomorrow I will let you know if I caught anything with that camera.
